The Greater Des Moines Community Band has announced the times, dates and locations for its Christmas Concert Series.
The band will perform at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Merle Hay Mall Food Court, 3800 Merle Hay Road, Des Moines.
Another concert is set for 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at the First Christian Church, 2500 University Ave., Des Moines.
The final concert will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, at The Reserve On Walnut Creek, 2727 82nd Place, Urbandale.
Selections will include "Angels We Have Heard On High," "I Heard the Bells On Christmas Day," "Jingle Bells," "Up On a Housetop," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Sleigh Ride."
David Liljedahl and Christa Miller are directors.
There is no admission charge for any of the concerts.

Fall concerts announced
The Greater Des Moines Community Band will present two Autumn Festival Concerts in October.
The first concert will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Merle Hay Mall Food Court, 3800 Merle Hay Road, Des Moines.
The second concert will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at the First Christian Church, 2500 University Ave., Des Moines.
The program will feature such numbers as "Amazing Grace," "The Strategic Air Command," "All the Pretty Little Horses," "El Camino Real," "All Things Considered" and "America the Beautiful."
The all-volunteer band is directed by David Liljedahl and Christa Miller.

Indianola performance set Monday
The Greater Des Moines Community Band will play at 7 p.m. Monday, June 13, at The Village, 1203 North East St., Indianola.
Band members should report at the outdoor venue at 6:30 p.m.
Band members should wear their summer band attire and bring their music stands. Chairs will be provided.
The playlist is as follows: "Midway March," "Armed Forces Salute," "First Suite in Eb," "Ballad For Clarinet," "An American In Paris," "A Night In the Tropics," "J. Band playing for Flag Day program
The Greater Des Moines Community Band is playing in a Flag Day program Sunday evening at Giovanetti Community Shelter, Walker Johnston Park, 9000 Douglas Ave., Urbandale.
The park is just west of the 86th Street Hy-Vee store. Enter the park from the Douglas Avenue entrance at 92nd Street and follow the signs back to the shelter area.
The band will line up in front of the fireplace inside the building. By row, the order is five clarinets and three flutes, first row; one tenor sax, two bass clarinets and five trumpets, second row; two alto saxes, five French horns, third row; three euphoniums and four trombones, fourth row; and two tubas and four percussion, back.
Band members should report at 5 p.m. and practice the National Anthem with the singer at 5:20 p.m. The concert will begin at 5:40 p.m.
The band will have to play on the softer side because the room has polished concrete floors and a low industrial ceiling with exposed heating and cooling.
The audience will be located on the band's right. They will go through the serving line as well as go to tables while the band plays.
Band members will be fed after the performance. Band members should put their instruments away immediately after the "Star Spangled Banner" and use their chairs to sit around tables supplied by the hosts.

Band playing in Memorial Day program near Capitol
The Greater Des Moines Community Band will participate in the World War II Memorial Day Remembrance at 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 30, at East 13th Street and Grand Avenue in Des Moines.
The program will include patriotic music selections, a rifle detail memorial salute, a tribute to World War II veterans and taps.
A picture of the band will be taken at 1:20 p.m. Each band member should bring a chair and stand and dress in his or her blue Greater Des Moines Community Band polo shirt and khaki pants or shorts.
The band's patriotic concert will include "Armed Forces Salute," "American Legion March," "Vietnam Veterans March," "God Bless America," "You're a Grand Old Flag," "The Liberty Bell" and "Midway March."
After the speaker's presentation, the band will play "Semper Fidelis" and "America the Beautiful."
Following a prayer, rifle salute and taps, the band will play "Stars and Stripes Forever."
The band will play next to the Freedom Flame memorial, a 50-foot-high stainless steel stylized flame, which honors all those who served during World War II and reminds Americans why the U.S. got involved in the conflict - to preserve freedom around the world.
Leading up to the flame is the Freedom Walk, a walkway through time, starting with Pearl Harbor. The plaza floor is comprised of a global map that shows the five major theaters of operation.
Monday's program will conclude at 3:05 p.m.
The VFW is in charge of the event.

Practice site switched
The Greater Des Moines Community Band will practice at Illahee Hills Retirement Center, 8308 Colby Parkway, Urbandale, on Monday, May 23.
The band will practice at its normal time from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. However, band members can set up as early as 6 p.m.
Band members should bring chairs and stands. Percussion should bring their equipment, stands, etc.
To get to the rehearsal site inside Illahee Hills Retirement Center, go to the entrance with the circle drive in front of it. After entering on the second floor of the building, go down one level to the first floor where the room is located. There should be an elevator available as well as stairs to help band members get downstairs.
Tonight's rehearsal (May 16) is at Rieman's as usual.
The band cannot use Rieman's or its usual backup site at Westkirk on May 23 due to conflicts at both sites.

Band practice resumes
It's good to be back playing band music again.
The Greater Des Moines Community Band held its first practice of the new year on Monday night.
Once again, there are some challenging numbers included in the playlist.
Don't forget, there is no practice on Monday night, Feb. 1, the date of the Iowa Caucuses.
One last thing. What do you think about putting short bios and photos of band members on this blog? It's an idea I've thought about since last fall.
